To Making New Friends!
Ah! February with Valentine’s Day and Presidents’ Day and a few warmer-than-usual days that hint at spring, at least here in the Pacific Northwest. Having spent a couple of weeks in Kihei (Maui) in January, I am eager for those warmer days. My feet prefer to wear sandals instead of boots. When I first moved back to my hometown from Dallas TX, where I did my residency, I didn’t own any shoes with closed toes. Those first fall rains were a shock! My feet still prefer warm weather.
I made a new friend on the Hawaiian Airlines flight to Maui. We talked most of the way over and discovered we were staying in condos a half-mile apart. We met every morning and walked 3-4 miles every day and solved all the world’s problems. Funny thing, though, there were new problems the next day to solve all over again. She taught me a few new Hawaiian words—beyond aloha and mahalo—and now I’m learning more of them. Did you know the Hawaiian language uses only 7 consonants plus an ‘Okina (it’s kind of a glottal pause) and 5 vowels? I’m up to 25 words!
As I write this, I will be the guest author for my friend’s book club in Los Gatos, CA. Their “book selector” chose my first book, Blind Fish Don’t Talk, for them to read and discuss. He didn’t know that Julia Fairchild’s friend Jill in that book is based on my dear friend Judy, a member of the club. Should be interesting!
And now, back to writing and let you get back to finding new books to read! A hui hou, malama pono. Hawaiian for “Take care until we meet again.”
Until next time, happy reading!
