Summer Reads
When we adopted Button (aka Queen of Sheba) and Cheddar (Horus), we promised that they would be indoor cats and that we wouldn’t declaw them (horrors!). It turns out that they love to be outside when we’re in the yard or on the deck and come in quite reluctantly. Button is typically more willing to follow when I’m ready to go inside, but Cheddar has a stubborn streak that is just as strong as his loveable kitty side. He ended up staying outside one night early on when I couldn’t find him anywhere. It was 2 a.m. when I woke up and had the strongest sense that he was outside the sliding door to the deck. And he was. He has been better about coming in when it gets late, but I’ve discovered a reason that there are tasty kitty treats—bribes work! And he always forgives me the next morning when he snuggles with me in the chair.
We have a sailboat that seems to need new sails on a regular basis. And a 36-foot boat has a lot of sails! Spirit also insists on fresh bottom paint every three years or so, which means hauling the boat out of the water. The crew spends several days scrubbing the barnacles off (they interfere with race speed, obviously) and prepping for the new (expensive) paint. This year happens to be one when a new sail and fresh paint coincide. Ouch! I’m not going to tell Mr. J how much the window treatments are going to cost. Turns out it’s less than the bottom paint which costs about $325 a gallon. And it’s not made out of gold, though it should be at that price.
I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer and pick up a book or two to read and keep independent authors busy. I can’t say that I can afford to live on my book earnings yet, but it’s one of those fantasies that keeps me writing one more book!
Until next time, happy reading!

It was a great party, until it wasn’t…
Christie’s Flower Shoppe is celebrating its first anniversary and its biggest commission yet: a fiftieth wedding anniversary party that puts Christie’s floral designs in a prestigious social spotlight. But when her extravagant bouquets set the scene for a murder, she finds herself dreading the headlines—again.
Luckily, she has a new venture to distract her: a garden landscape sideline with her best friend, Anita. With Christie’s knowledge of flowers and shrubs, and Anita’s flair for design, the business promises to take Christie beyond her shop walls.
When Anita overhears a shady backyard conversation while on the job, the murder victim’s past falls into their laps. But is this a garden-variety dispute, or a ruthless act of revenge?
