Holiday Wishes and the Best Gift Ever! 🎁🎄

At our Thanksgiving dinner with family and friends, one of our guests shared a story that made me happy and a little sad at the same time. Her husband’s father had just graduated from college and wasn’t making a lot of money yet. With two small children to feed as well, his mother was very frugal. They ate their hot dogs with a “bun” made of white sandwich bread. Years later, when they no longer had money worries, they still ate hot dogs with bread instead of the traditional bun. (So did we, actually, with a family of six children.)

On a cross-country visit with their son and daughter-in-law (my friend), they were treated to hot dogs with a real hot dog bun. The father-in-law enjoyed that simple meal as though it were the best entrée in a fancy restaurant. For Christmas that year, my friend sent him a box of hot dog buns and he pronounced them as the best gift ever.

Sometimes the simplest things are the best gift. Maybe it’s time that you share with a grieving friend. Maybe it’s offering to watch someone’s children while they go to a doctor’s appointment. As I write this, it’s people I don’t even know offering to look my lost kitty after I posted on the local “lost pet” site.
