Cabaret Craziness
Every two years a local non-profit organization produces a cabaret-follies type of show at our beautiful art Deco theatre that turned 100 years old in April. About one hundred singers and dancers (and would-be dancers!) turned up to do three performances during one weekend. This year’s show was called entitled “The Time of My Life.”
Having been the general show chairman, now for the third time, I can tell you that my life has been consumed with “cabaret craziness” these past four weeks. Our producer-director sweeps into town with the music and choreography for all the numbers, as well as the costumes. We spend the next three weeks learning the tap dances, mambos, and other numbers that we then perform on stage for the enjoyment of our community. Two years ago we were able to write a check for $20,000 to our beneficiary, also a non-profit group.
The next day as I moved in slo-mo after doing eight numbers in each of three shows, including a total of nine tap dances, I wondered how those Rockettes manage to keep smiling for multiple days of dancing! Well, they are a lot younger than I am.
Tap dancing is one of my hobbies and I’ve been on a half-dozen “dance cruises” where we performed on the mainstage of big cruise ships. Dancing on a cruise ship and taking a riverboat trip along the Rhine River is what inspired my book Rembrandt Rides a Bike. I simply moved a dance cruise to a land version. And added a mystery or two, of course. The four main characters are based on three of my fellow dancers plus Julia as a younger version of me. Check it out!
Until next time, happy reading!
